A girl at my kids’ high school had McDonald’s delivered by Uber Eats. She thought she was really cool (and apparently other kids did too). Not true. It was a hassle delivering to students anyway. Aside from being against school rules, students often misjudged how long it might take to receive a delivery and if the driver showed up too late (after lunch period, for example), the student would most likely not show up to meet the driver. This wastes a lot of time for the drivers during an already busy lunch, and results in a lot of wasted product. It’s easier and saves everyone a lot of time and money to just refuse to deliver to schools as a blanket policy.

Is it only for certain delivery apps? My friends got McDonald’s delivered to our college campus a few months back Turf protection. Schools run their own racket that separated kids and their lunch money in return for awful food. As someone who does DoorDash on the side, I will not deliver to schools now after a year of nothing but bad experiences with it. With college students, it’s always insanely hard to find a place to park, then actually locate the student who placed the order (I don’t go to your school— I don’t know what “next to the quad” or “the sports dorm” is in your definition), AND college students tend to tip terribly if they tip at all. Just a huge waste of time all around. And then with k-12 schools, it’s very often students who are still in class when I arrive (time is money. No, I’m not going to “just wait 15 minutes!” until you’re out of class), and half the time they’re going against school rules anyway. They also tend to tip badly. So, it’s just not worth it to deliver to schools, like at all.

Lucky for me, a lot of restaurants— not just McD’s— have started enforcing this policy as well. One time I had someone have an order to a school, right as school was letting out. So cars everywhere, kids everywhere, and the only way into the school was through the parents pickup line. Took 30 minutes to get through the line, finally was able to get to the parking lot. Of course the office was on the other side of campus, walking the long way around because of locked doors. Finally get in there and they can’t get ahold of whatever staff member ordered the food. All in all, between driving to the restaurant, waiting for the food, and delivering it, it took me an hour and a half. Plus they didn’t tip. All that for $3. I assume I’m not the only one that went through this.

I worked at a mcdonalds in 2004 where we had an order for 26 mchickens and 25 quarter pounders with fries and drinks for an elementary school. I believe that many schools have policies on healthy eating which parents do not like, and this resulted in high profile cases where parents would deliberately order McDonalds to the school and pass it to their kids through the fence in order to pointedly contravene a policy they disagreed with. I imagine McD’s wanted nothing to do with this kind of controversy and so have just set a global policy to avoid being accused of picking and choosing.

I believe it’s about nutritional experiments to see if certain kids will turn out skinny/healthy vs. fat/unhealthy if they’re fed certain things as a child, in school. I’ve heard about a couple of instances where some assistant principal or SRO threw out a kid’s Lunchables, saying it wasn’t healthy. I also heard about a couple of school systems that bought out a local food stand because it was so close, the kids were going over there to get hamburgers for lunch. That’s going far, for something that maintains they’re financially strapped. They must want this very badly.
