Abandon pacing! There’s no time to digest anything and really get into the really interesting material. Zero technology, ever. There’s so much research on how boredom is imperative for cognitive development and yet half my freshman are out 2-3 times a week with their various clubs and competitions, and then we wonder why they can’t sit still. Parents, admin, must understand that failure is part of the learning process. The drive for perfection means 90% of students don’t actually learn anything because we don’t allow them to make mistakes and correct them because god forbid it affects their GPA for college.

No institution has done more to transform American education into an industrial conveyor belt instead of the hollistic process it’s meant to be, I hate them. I agree with that history pacing is insane but the renaissance probably isn’t the best example. Since world history is more a fairly high level overview of important stuff. And 3 weeks is a pretty decent amount of time to spend on a single time period. I used that period as an example I can speak of with authority. I promise you I could do a whole year on the Renaissance even with a class that meets every day of the week like AP World Class. Moreover, everyone I know from grad school, from ancient to modern historians, could do the same for their subject matter. Reducing the entirety of the Renaissance to a 3 week chunk robs it of everything, which is true of every other period covered by World/Euro history courses. The overall point was there’s no mastery, no time for writing, no time to fully embrace the nuances of any time period or people. I cannot tell you how many times I had students in college tell me they would have liked history more if they learned all this “other stuff” that gets ripped out of our curricula as k-12 teachers.
