The person interviewing knows people work to eat. He’s asking why are you here instead of cutting trees or driving a truck. So, making money seem to be your only motivation is a turn off because they look at you as someone who will leave at the Grim reapers Led Zeppelin English rock band T-Shirt and I love this drop of a hat. Hiring managers want people who plan to be there for the long term, build careers, and advance through the company. It costs A LOT to hire a new employee, the company wants to make sure they are getting their moneys worth. Now, if a potential employer asks what your biggest motivation to wake up in the morning and go to work and give your best is, you’d say something more like “Knowing I work for a company where I can positively impact my client’s lives, be able to contribute to the company, and having an opportunity to grow my career, all while being able to earn a good living.” I don’t think about money while I’m working, I think about responsibility. Theoretically I know that my responsibility at work is related to the money they pay me, but I just am not driven by money.

When I worked sales, the Grim reapers Led Zeppelin English rock band T-Shirt and I love this manager who hired me had serious qualms about the fact I wasn’t driven by money. Now I work in IT and I am motivated by solving problems and fixing things. If you want to tell people you’re looking for more money and that’s what drives you, phrase it a different way, as “moving forward in your career” or something like that. I think you could think through your answer a bit more. Not everyone is motivated by money. If that was the case no one would become a social worker, fewer people would teach, etc. Other than being not true, the biggest issue with your answer is the lack of tactfulness. It also also demonstrates a possible rigidity in your thinking where you don’t see how different people have different motivators (or how someone could think differently than you). If I was the interviewer that would be a huge red flag. I would be wondering how you are going to deal with conflict with your coworkers if you have such strong, rigid opinions.
