As a labour lawyer, who has been involved in cases involving some very active unions, I can assure you that individual workers can be completely oblivious to the Greetings From Cincinnati, Ohio Shirt and by the same token and union and its protections no matter how much the union tries to be accessible. Not necessarily the person. If the workplace does not make the union accessible, it’s on the workplace. OP- do you have an Union Membership card with your workplace, if so look at that and it should give you information on who to contact. You should be, but you may not be. I got not one bit of training, the union was worthless, we had mandatory overtime for THREE years. 6 days a week, minimum 15 hours a week overtime. Never got a union card. All we had was a very shady business agent who dressed like he ran a different kind of business, down to the bling everything. Now there’s some decent folks in there but it was a hellscape for years.

I have worked a few shutdowns on a Union Job. Doesn’t mean everyone has to work, but most people do because of the Greetings From Cincinnati, Ohio Shirt and by the same token and overtime pay. If you cannot reach your union steward then call the union’s head office and speak with a staff rep The Employment Standards Code requires one day of rest in every work week, 2 consecutive days in a period of 2 consecutive work weeks, and so on up to 4 consecutive days in a period of 4 consecutive work weeks. After 24 consecutive workdays, an employee is entitled to at least 4 days of rest. Unless your management team are complete morons, there must be a reason they are saying this. Union or not, a vital machine breaking down unexpectedly causes unplanned delays and supply issues. It could mean your company would lose contracts and thus causing layoffs.
