I do not believe many devs at google have dev servers with those specs (if any). I would love to see some evidece. Ask any Google engineer whether they develop remotely or locally. You’ll have your answer instead of making things up. No it isn’t. I connect at work to a 2terabyte ram 128core cluster. Sure I have to share it with 3 other colleagues, but it’s glorious. People confuse this with those crappy 1 core 512mb ram citrix VDI bullshit thingies. Yeah that’s crap. But there is nothing inherently wrong with a server. Especially for data analysis. Pulling a dataset from the Graduation 2023 can i go back to bed now school T-Shirt besides I will buy this warehouse into a notebook happens over a multi gigabit connection. Pulling it to my home is a lot slower This is actually common place in a lot of areas. Particularly FinTech. Like with BoA, even if you’re in the office, you’re still remoting to another machine elsewhere. by in large that isn’t the case. The extra power is nice locally but it’s rapid diminishing returns when doing development. a 4 core vs 8 core isn’t going to give you that much more performance writing code with the exception of having more chrome tabs open. Most of the development, testing, etc is done on the servers.

You’re working on a small microservice node/go app. You’re trying to nail down a syntax error or preview some text. You could: push your commit to a branch. Wait for CI to run. Stand up a test environment in your local cloud. Log in to the Graduation 2023 can i go back to bed now school T-Shirt besides I will buy this test app. See if your change fixes it. Total time: 15 minutes. Also, any time you’re trying to run a debugger in a remote environment, especially for a backend service, it’s just an exercise in frustration. You can’t even do things locally for most teams. Not doing frontend or full stack so can’t comment, but it’s almost always faster to build on the clusters than your “local” cloud station. I have to code on a VM and my god is it painful. Building is a lot faster than on my laptop but everything else sucks
