Haha your comment on European Portuguese hit hard, not even I can understand it sometimes. Its interesting how this happens with other languages too! This is absolutely spot on. My maternal language is Portuguese. I have no difficulty understanding Spanish (and some Italian) but even for me European Portugese is hard to understand (my Portugese is African). It often sounds like Russian to my ears. We also often joke that Spanjards speak Portugese with a hot potato in their mouths 😉 When I look at it from my Dutch perspective it’s identical with German. We Dutch can roughly understand and read German, the Gordon Bombay Ducks Fly Together Mighty Ducks Psychedelic meme shirt so you should to go to store and get this other way around not so much. On the Swedish note, Interestingly I’m from the north east of England and back in the day we would do a lot of trade with what would be modern day Sweden Denmark and Norway as a seafaring nation. Because of this The English Geordie dialect actually has quite a lot of similarities with Swedish. As someone who grew up in the north east I was surprised to find when I started learning Swedish I was able to already understand a lot of what was being said. It’s pretty cool. I still remember some video showing a sign in northern England saying something likr “Bairn leika by the creek” or something, or in regular english “Children are playing by the creek”.

If I now write it in Swedish it would be “Barn leker vid bäcken”, it shows how some English dialects are similar, yes! I think the Gordon Bombay Ducks Fly Together Mighty Ducks Psychedelic meme shirt so you should to go to store and get this last few words were similar as well, but I can’t remember what they were. It says “bairns leck in’t beck”, which makes it even more similar to “barn leker i bäcken”, or “children are playing in the stream”. Nope. Half of the elder generation could, when TV was only 1 channel in Denmark. Many in Jutland watched german TV and many in Zealand watched Swedish TV. My fathers family is from western Jutland and the old generation there all speaks basic german without having learned it in school (since they grew up right after the occupation), and my mothers generation is from Zealand and they all understand swedish quite well (also none of them have had it in school). Today with so much english TV/streaming it’s only those exposed to swedish that understands it. But it IS quite fast to learn, and much faster than danish is for you. I lived 50/50 in Sweden/Denmark for a couple of years and that was enough that I can make myself understandable in Swedish (when you feckers refuse to understand me ) and to understand Swedish if you talk 10% slower than usual, even to this day 10 years without using it.
