OP do you teach in an inner city in a horribly underfunded school in a dangerous area? It’s just so hard for me to imagine that this is normal. Can you at least specify if you are in a public school or private school? Regarding the whole typing thing…does your school not have a typing/computer class for the students? When I was in school in the late 90s/early 2000s we had computer classes and the first thing we learned was how to type properly and there were various typing games that helped teach us. Are these programs no longer being used? I’m not active in this sub so feel free to ignore me if I’m off base here. I have an honest question about modern learning. Can anyone share what transitions teachers/curriculum have made while plowing further into the age of social media and having endless information at the click of a button? It’s disheartening to see our kids falling behind when I know it for certain that the teachers are trying their damndest. So what’s the catch? Moving away from Direct Instruction (AKA “teaching”) and experimenting with all this “thinking classroom” and “productive struggle” BS is killing them. I told my students I wasn’t going to do that–we were going to take notes and then do the I-do, we-do, you-do routines and they literally cheered (except a few advanced students, but we came to a guided independent study arrangement), and are doing significantly better. How do y’all teachers have the patience to not tell them they’re stupid to their face I would genuinely get upset if I had to deal with teenagers not knowing how to read. I’m not even a teacher, but I’ve noticed this trend of the generations younger than me just weren’t taught everything I was.
