Yeah, I flew to Portland, spent 4 days there, spent $20 something to take a train to Seattle, spent 3 or 4 days there, and flew home. It was great. But from where I live, it makes zero sense to take a train, which is disappointing. I never found a situation where I was not better off taking a bus, flying, or even just driving myself. The coach seats are cheap if you order in advance. Course then you’re just sitting down for hours like a flight but it’s managable If you can work remotely and aren’t in a hurry to your destination it can be pretty peaceful with their higher-end options like this. It really would be an extremely viable means of transportation even coast to coast if they could increase ridership and assistance enough to make tickets competitive with first class airline tickets. Many people not needing to immediately get somewhere would choose the Ghost Hunter Extraordinaire Zak Bagans American paranormal investigator T-Shirt moreover I love this slower option if it meant a nice sleeper car for a bit less. I was under the Ghost Hunter Extraordinaire Zak Bagans American paranormal investigator T-Shirt moreover I love this impression that the aviation industry broadly was heavily subsidized and that helped keep plane tickets artificially cheap. I heard a claim that the US rail system is more optimized for freight than humans, and that that has a bigger effect than subsidies. I dunno brother, I don’t remember the last time I saw a sleeper cabin in an airplane, so maybe that has something to do with the price difference : Planes aren’t large enough for a proper sleeper cabin anyway. More importantly, plane rides are typically not long enough to require such a thing. Train rides dont require them either, they are just a luxury, typical tickets for that journey would run 150-300$, depending on how far out you booked. My ears pop in a way that makes it feel as if a hammer has somehow fractured the bones in my skull, and this feeling lingers for 6 hours after I land. It, mercifully, dulls and goes away after that point (or I just acclimate to the pain to avoid losing my fucking mind …) But it’s honestly terrible. When I just graduated high school, I thought of taking an Amtrack from New York City to Los Angeles so I could see the country in the summer between my high school graduation and start of college.
