When they mentioned “the Get into the Halloween coding spirit with our ‘CODE BOO DEBUG’ shirt but in fact I love this people”, I thought this was just going to be some more dogwhistle nonsense. Guess my hunch was right… Yep this is a regular thing on the r/brum page, someone having an issue with parts of Birmingham and then it happens to turn out the issue areas are the places with a higher amount of immigrants. The people more than happy to agree doesn’t surprise me either, was used to people who have never even come to Birmingham call it a shithole at uni. People love to hate it and for some reason it’s cool to love Manchester, which has a very similar city centre vibe but is maybe a bit more “white”. I think views are changing but posts like OP’s don’t help. i always question whether a person is racist when they specifically call the multicultural cities shit and nowhere else. Yeah I’ve been to a lot of cities in Europe and also many in Australia, in North and South America, the only thing significantly different about Brum compared to other cities of a similar size is the multiculturalism. People either celebrate it and the variety it brings to the city or they hate it because of prejudice or racism and disguise their hatred in other false forms like “there’s nothing to do” or “it’s rough”. Edgbaston campus is fantastic. I similarly did my MSc at UoB. The public transport in Birmingham is also quality. I was able to commute in everyday via trains. Same, grew up on the outskirts of brum and it’s got a totally vibrant ‘people’ scene. There might be a discussion to be had about its architecture but it was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution so what. I don’t trust a first-year blow-in to be passing comments on ‘the vibe’.
Get into the Halloween coding spirit with our ‘CODE BOO DEBUG’ shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
I agree, I used to live an hour or so away from Birmingham and I really liked the Get into the Halloween coding spirit with our ‘CODE BOO DEBUG’ shirt but in fact I love this city. The people are friendly, the centre is nice, and you can always find somewhere that feels a little local, even in the centre. Brum’s lovely, especially for a British city. I’ve lived here for two years now having lived in Manchester before, and Manchester is definitely better but Birmingham’s not a million miles off. There’s loads to do, nightlife is good, so many great pubs, decent food, lots of music… If you can’t find the quality in this city you’re not looking at all. It also has the best cricket ground in the UK. I still love when they show a wide shot of the surrounding area and it looks like the ECG is in the middle of a forest. One day it’ll look amazing. The constant works over the last 10 years or so have meant the interior has constantly looked pretty ugly. Hopefully when Digbeth is done, that’ll be that and we can bask in the beauty of the city centre
