It felt good then but it sucks now because Abrams used the ‘mystery box’ trick and now that we know the shitty answers to the questions he asked it’s no longer interesting. there was a lot of “i bet they explain that in the sequel” that never happened which made the force awakens a lot weaker in hind sight Because somehow one of the biggest franchise of all time owned by goliath media company couldn’t figure out how to get writers in a room to pre-plan all 3 new movies in a way that would make sense. It was a total shitshow and that’s why they’re terrible. Somehow can have incredible graphics and production quality but can’t get a dozen writers to do their job and sign on producer and director that would be present for the whole thing. Not somehow, they didn’t care and went the minimal effort to “get by” while attempting to rake in the money. They knew what they were doing. I’d take it a step forward, I’d say they actually put in a lot of effort to make it deliberately disjointed. Why were there two different directors? Then the second film was incredibly divisive so they got back the first one because they thought he could fix it all

Like set people up to expect a rehashing of the original trilogy plot points but then surprise them with, idk, Rey goes to the dark side? Finn is force sensitive? Kylo wants to destroy the galaxy rather than rule it? I don’t know just mix it up a little bit. I think Rian Johnson is a fine filmmaker but man what a mistake to dump Star Wars in his lap. There’s a podcast called Celluloid Dreams which interviewed him after Knives Out years ago and I still remember they ask him about Star Wars and what it was like to be responsible for one of the highest grossing films of all time and he is noticeably uncomfortable with the question. Like sure it raked in a billy, but I don’t think he’s proud of it at all.
