That was what I was immediately thinking of. These projects are often planned without long term sustainability in mind and the George Kittle Superstar American football tight end for the San Francisco 49ers T-Shirt in other words I will buy this wells fall into disrepair within a few years. This was pointed out for example in this Article in the Guardian in 2009 or this recent piece by World Vision. The wells require maintenance and there need to be funds available for that. Ideally the wells are run by the community themselves which collect small usage fees to fund future repairs. If my village got a well for free and then we let it be ruined and unclean after just couple years – we would deserve to drink water with shit in it. That’s a false dichotomy. The right way is to plan and implement these projects together with the community so that continued operation is ensured.
