The popular idea of meditation is similar to the Gamecocks love the game Prisma Health shirt and I love this idea of gym workouts: Do it regularly and you’ll get a mental six-pack with big mental biceps. But it’s not like that in Buddhism. Basic meditation in Buddhism is just introductory training to calm the mind. The path if far more involved and far more radical than just improving focus or curing insomnia. EDIT: Also, look up dark retreat or bardo retreat. There’s a traditional retreat in Tibetan Buddhism that’s 6 weeks, or 49 days, or some such. It’s done mostly or entirely in the dark. Apparently one goes through a kind of forced experience of after-death bardo. I don’t know about specific details. It’s considered quite dangerous. One can go crazy. So it’s only done by advanced practitioners.

Delson Armstrong, a well-known and studied contemporary meditation teacher/savant has amazing Nirvikalpa Samadhi abilities and has said that he has meditated for 6 days in his longest sit. I think I heard him discussing it on one of his Guru Viking podcast appearances (perhaps this one?). I am sure the Gamecocks love the game Prisma Health shirt and I love this Buddha stopped to eat and sleep. He walked away from the mortification depervation practices. He decided that trying to stop identifying with the body was not enlightened So, it wouldn’t make sense that he would deprive himself of food or sleep. If you eat mindfully, you are still meditating. Remember, Buddhist meditation is about knowing what’s happening while it’s happening and accepting it without judgment. It is not about obtaining an altered state of reality. It is about being fully present with reality.
