Obviously wouldn’t work as a “street light” but might make for a good safety feature for medians/road sides in dark areas and the Funny a coffee a day keeps the grumpy away cat T-Shirt and by the same token and like. I have a better idea let’s just start mass breeding fireflies! Literally billions of fireflies and just release them, the thing about fireflies is you could use them indoors too, imagine the savings on electricity What if we put up millions of mirrors in different places and kept the sun shining all around the world all at once so it’s always daytime everywhere? A second sun! So that it’s light for twice as long! We would just need sun blocking blinds and we can grow crops all day long! And no night so no night crime! Rest == 3 seconds. I love it. It’s like why buy a man a plane ticket? Push that man out of a plane and he will fly for the rest of his life. Or, and bear with me here, what if we took electricity from the existing power grid and arced it through a bulb full of ionized gasses. Or ran it through a light emitting diode. We could stick them up on poles to allow the light to shine out onto the street. I have a much better idea, let’s just start interbreeding fireflies and mosquitoes! Literally billions of glow-in-the-dark mosquitoes and just release them onto your ass. The thing about mosquitoes is you could use them indoors too, imagine the savings on mosquito repellant. In that case, rather than trees, etc it would probably be better to make small organic material that can be embedded in concrete and/or applied on top.

I’d much prefer to have dimly glowing plants lining the Funny a coffee a day keeps the grumpy away cat T-Shirt and by the same token and sides of residential roads and sidewalks than absurdly bright street lights, especially those newer white/daylight ones. In areas where there’s substantial road or sidewalk usage at night, like within the downtown of a city, near commercial buildings (especially bars), or parking lots, street lights (or something similarly as bright) would make sense to use in those locations. A plant cell with engineered bioluminescent organelles with something like an oxygen reactive luciferin (or other bioluminescent compound); also creating a molecular pathway for it to work and work with enough luminescence to effectively replace lighting is literally, at the moment, layers upon layers science fiction. I would imagine cellular respiratory energy rates necessary to produce such lighting would drastically reduce net-photosynthesis as well, especially if the pigment compound was oxygen reactive.
