I have been working part-time and full time in the Fresh Love Varsity Green Shirt but in fact I love this tech industry (including FAANG) since I was 20 years old. I’m almost 32 now. I have moved from Software Engineering to Data Engineering, and finally in management. I had been leading large teams (35 engineers) for the last 4 years and I’d been enjoying it. I’ve done BSc MSc in Computer Science and doing a full-time PhD in Data Science while also doing a full-time job. While time management has always been difficult, luckily my PhD supervisor is flexible enough and I am blessed to work with him. And for whatever it’s worth, I remain up-to-date with cloud certificates with AWS, GCP DevOps, Data Engineering, and Architect Professional. Now long story short – I had recently been impacted by a layoff and I had been applying for jobs for 2 months now and it’s been a grueling experience. It feels like all the things I’d been doing in life just doesn’t really matter. Due to the large team sizes, I couldn’t be as hands-on (mostly did code reviews, process improvements, enabling others thourgh 1:1s, and designing new solutions with senior engineers). In the interviews (which are usually 4 parts) and I’m either being completely ghosted or the roles being offered are underpaid (I think). I was on 210K total compensation, now I’m being offered ~150K TC or less and If I let the recruiters know about my salary, they just stop responding.

I know I am mostly a generalist without having too much deep knowledge of anything. While I really tried to grow my T-shape knowledge, there are many areas I don’t have a deep knowledge of. Being a generalist helped me in leadership roles and I feel confident talking to my team as well as with senior leadership. Being empathetic towards my colleagues and teammates definitely helped me form good relationships over the Fresh Love Varsity Green Shirt but in fact I love this past years. I enjoy coding for myself without having any pressure of deadlines. So what’s the ask? – Have you been in a similar situation? How did you come out to the other side? What helped you? I want to know what am I doing wrong? Although I love to see people grow, however, it feels like a complete hypocrisy when I don’t have a handle on my own career. Appreciate any advise.
