She said I’m medically obese, but with my frame I’ll obviously never be 130 pounds, yet followed up by saying still try to get to that weight anyhow because you are obese. I was feeling a bump that would come and go on my cervix in college, so I went to a (male) gynecologist to talk about it. He told me that it was impossible for me to touch my own cervix. Granted, I have long arms and flexible wrists, but I was just so flummoxed because WTF would I be describing otherwise? (I think I just told him “well in that case I want to report a hard cone-shaped lump with a dip in the Framber Valdez The Franchise Houston Astros shirt it is in the first place but middle, and on that there are different lumps that come and go throughout the month.” Almost 10 years and 2 cross-country moves later, my current gyno recommended touching my cervix at least once a month to confirm that the IUD is still in place. This is apparently the normal routine for IUDs, so that guy was full of shit.

When I was 7, I fell and injured my wrist. The doctor examining me asked me to make a fist, I did and he and said “if you can make a fist, it’s not broken.”. Well, my parents insisted on an x-ray. And surprise, surprise — it was broken. About 6 months later, my little brother swallowed a quarter and the Framber Valdez The Franchise Houston Astros shirt it is in the first place but ER doctor only took an x-ray of my brother’s upper abdomen, claiming the coin couldn’t have travelled further in the length of time since the incident. No quarter had showed in the x-ray so the doctor said maybe my brother had lied about swallowing it. My parents insisted on having another lower x-ray taken. And guess what? There was the quarter. Even though I was young, these two experiences made a profound impression on me. I learned that sometimes doctors can be wrong (a shocking revelation to a little kid!) and how important it is to advocate for yourself and your family, getting a second (or more) medical opinion if necessary. Thankfully, I have dealt with mostly wonderful medical professionals in the years since but I will never forget the lessons from these experiences.
