Think this is completely different from Succession and the Fight like a Mahou Shoujo T-Shirt and by the same token and “stealth wealth” style people point out from there. That show is basically a commercial for Loro Piana, Brunello Cuccinelli, etc.I think a lot of times what people think of old money is also what the internet tells them to think of old money. Most of the younger gens born into old money don’t dress well imo. If we look at Prince William & Harry, literal definition of born into it, both dress like ass.Yeah there was a picture of the founder of LVMH’s son at a basketball game recently, wearing like an NFT necklace or something with the Tiffany Nikes. Classic heavy handed uber rich guy look. It’s also hilariously self-defeating to want to dress “old money” – something that signals authenticity, deep roots, and being in the know – aspirationally by normal people who are not old money and just putting on a costume that is trying to signal wealth lol. In some ways putting on a bunch of new-money designer logos is more straightforward and authentic cringe when I’m scrolling through TikTok and I see “old money shopping list” and see people linking to a combination of Zara and Abercrombie.
Fight like a Mahou Shoujo T-Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
Like it’s a good, clean aesthetic – but you’re not going to fast fashion shop your way into “old money”.But I think most people just like the Fight like a Mahou Shoujo T-Shirt and by the same token and style, right? Like, I’m not dressing like that to pretend I’m old money, I just want to adopt the style for aesthetic reasons. To be fair, “old money fashion” tends to be wearing older styles that are adapted to the most current fashion without branding. Zara and Abercrombie copy what the most expensive houses put out, and then consumers sort themselves out into trying to copy “new money” or “old money” rich people. They have both versions of the fashion, and frankly I do think that Zara/Abercrombie are what old money wears these days (at least in the city I live in). What makes the first one “new” and the second one “old” is that the first one copies rich people who want the absolute newest fashion, while the second one copies rich people who want to imitate the past, looking like something out of the 70s but with a modern revamp. Plus, the clothing is pretty plain.I guess we’ve been looking at different people, because the people on my feeds are definitely going for the “stealth wealth” look of no conspicuous logos or designs, but high quality, often vintage clothing.I think that’s still a separate style than “old money”. Stealth wealth you could say perhaps might be a more contemporary version of old money though.Well you never said what you think “old money” is, just what you think it isn’t. I personally believe it’s a made up concept and there is no rhyme or reason to how the elite dress. But lots of people seem to have ideas about what it would look like if there was an universal style for them.I mean it’s a real term but it’s not really a single definable aesthetic, it just refers to generational wealth (as in 3+ generations or so). Elon Musk is old money, the Koch brothers are old money, the Trumps are old money, etc, it’s really not the kind of thing you should aspire to emulate unless you look up to some major shitheads.I’m obviously not the arbiter of what “old money” in terms of clothes is, but I think it’s a little more amorphous. If I had to try to nail some common threads down, I’d say some custom made tailoring, stuff that was bought 30 years ago and repaired rather than discarded. Stuff that you can really tell is used, like an old beat up Barbour from years of outdoor activities or a tweed jacket with elbow patches. The key thing is the use. It’s not obtained for the purpose of making an “aesthetic”.Old money mentality is buying quality items that will last and then repairing those items forever to avoid spending more money. Real money doesn’t have to prove anything outwardly with what they’re wearing.”Old money” is a pretty nebulous term that becomes harder to define the more exact you are. It really only makes sense when speaking in vaguities. The fact is that most “old money” dies within a few generations, and when it doesn’t, their descendants don’t tend to spend it on high-end brands. The current generation of nobles, Rockefellers, Rothschilds, etc, mostly dress rather bland unless they’re at some sort of gala or similar. As an example, look up pictures of Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken, the richest Dutch person alive today, whose ancestors bought the Heineken brewery over 150 years ago and can trace further mercantile success back to the earliest days of capitalism.
