I’m with you on that. I have always requested the Field Day Let the games begin rainbow heart T-Shirt and by the same token and exception high-performance laptop and extra ram because of this. I hate sitting around waiting for my computer to move. The problem is that IT isn’t treated as just another position that supports the business. Just like janitors, plumbers, electricians, etc., They all support the business. They don’t run it. I’m not supposed to use my insane home pc for work but I do it anyways because the laptop they sent me is trash. They want us to RTO and I’ll have to work on the shitmachine back at the office, just demolishing my productivity on top of the myriad other RTO downsides :). At least some mouthbreather will be able to stop by my desk and comment on the weather or say TGIF, though! I’ve been running engineering squads for close to 15 years, and the first they get when they walk in the door is dual monitors, high spec laptops and their own cloud dev instances to deploy and test to.

Nothing worse than having 30+ engineers sitting around for up to 30 minutes at a time to see if their latest change worked or not. We lose up to 30-40% of time in a day waiting for builds to deploy and dealing with getting your brain back in the Field Day Let the games begin rainbow heart T-Shirt and by the same token and zone for the problem being solved. But that’s not what they’re doing lmao. Non tech roles get chromebooks, swe’s get MacBook pros. It’s pretty obvious. i handle all the data for my department. my coworkers and i all have the same work-issued laptops, but mine is significantly shittier because i always have some kind of software running. sometimes when i try to load up power bi for example, my entire computer grinds to a halt for a good 15 minutes or until i close the program in task manager. i’ve tried to raise the issue with our IT department that my laptop can’t keep up with my workload and they brush it off because “my department was just issued new computers two years ago”. everything is backed up on a cloud but im so sure that one day my computer is going to nope out completely and i will 100% say “i told you so” Exempt employees, so the onus is on the employee to get the work done regardless of how long it takes. So cutting help desk or laptop replacements is cost savings for the employer.
