Beyond that, it seems weird that any landlord would leave a unit empty for that long. My last landlord had my final apartment under lease before we even moved out. Every apartment prior I had to deal with back to back showings in my final weeks. You think a landlord would just leave a unit unoccupied and not producing income? Not to mention that an unoccupied home is at risk of deterioration. But then the renter thought it would be less work for him to just rent it out altogether The neighbor/”landlord” is awfully stupid. And then “landlord” had absolutely no idea what to do when the mark didn’t bite the way he wanted them to. So, clearly, since the lease is illegal, there’s no way the tenant would call the cops, right!? The kind of neighbor/”landlord” that runs a scam that close to home is just going to be naturally awfully dense. As such these are likely answers to your questions: Because purported landlord and property owners are actually friends, property owner wants to use the house for something else, and the whole thing is one big scam
