The Faces of Death franchise has become synonymous with the most extreme and controversial horror films ever made. Originally released in 1978, the film claims to showcase authentic footage of real-life deaths and autopsies. While the veracity of these claims has been disputed, the film’s unflinching depictions of violence and human suffering have cemented its place in the annals of cinematic gore.

The first Faces of Death film was directed by John Alan Schwartz, a self-proclaimed “armchair anthropologist” who sought to explore the limits of human endurance and the nature of death. Schwartz assembled a crew of cameramen and traveled to various countries, surreptitiously filming gruesome footage of accidents, executions, and medical procedures. The resulting film is a relentless onslaught of brutality, interspersed with philosophical commentary from Schwartz and his collaborators.
