Explain to them when they tell you that old lady substitute teachers are mean and then they say all old ladies are mean then explain why that is a stereotype, like what the BLM protesters were about. This is why being present is important. And by being present, I don’t mean just being there, but paying attention and guiding them. You’re not raising children. You’re raising adults, they just happen to be children right now. So in between those moments where you have to be serious, let them be kids. Let them make mistakes within reason.

I only have girls, so I don’t know how/if I would be any different with a boy.
