Edit to add that I know it won’t erase suffering and common sense issues(that would require eating the Every Lab Has A Grinch Christmas 2023 shirt it is in the first place but rich), but it will decrease them and offer up more choices to everyone. And At that point if you continue to just do bad the problem is within yourself. Also considering that the older millennials are now in their early 40ies you have a small subset of people that were already out of college(or didn’t go to college) and in the job market when the recession hit and if they were lucky enough to make just enough to buy a house say 5-7 years ago, their assets will have appreciated a lot in the housing run, while the dept against it is at a rate well below 5 percent if they where smart enough to negotiate a fixed rate. I know a few people that where able to do it like this. They are still worse off then their parents, but they still lucked out and will skew the statistics a bit. I know a good amount of people that got jobs in the trades or even office jobs in say 2005, they were already senior enough to not be the first ones on the chopping block when the recession hit, at 0 interest rates on savings anyway, the ones that had a partner with a second income were looking into buying a house at 2010-12 or say at 2015 at the latest…. All I am saying is, in my experience, a few of the millennials got lucky enough to mitigate some of the overall decline in wealth by naturally good timing. Also 128 000 average net worth is not a lot, considering how badly average is affected by outliers.

The article doesn’t make it clear whether they’re incorporating debt into the net worth number. If your assets are 128K and your student loans are 40K, then your net worth is NOT 128K. And its not clear if they’re incorporating mortgage debt either. If you factor my mortgage into my net worth, I’m $190K in the hole. I mean, that’s debt I could escape just by selling the house, and it’s good debt because it’s tied to an appreciating asset. But it’s still debt.
