It’s mostly a thing in places like my hometown in Missouri. People believe that once you’re 18, you’re “an adult” which in their minds means you should automatically have a full-time job and be able to take care of yourself. They’re usually the Elvis costello On Chair English songwriter T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this same people who say “get a job then” to the homeless. I moved out at 18 due to a toxic living situation with my parents. They were extremely homophobic so it was either I left or they forced me. Otherwise, they would have let me stay through college at most. Unrelated note: their homophobia has at least improved enough where it’s no longer a barrier to family gatherings with my partner. In reality we decide to leave at 18 we’re not kicked out. Kids look forward to the day they can turn 18 become legally an adult and move out so they don’t gave to follow their parents rules anymore. People who are kicked out usually have bad, or straining relationships with their parents or are too troublesome/immature in nature to stay with they parents as they may pose a bigger risk to the home if they stay. This is what happened to me but it was necessary.
