I think she was a bit moody at our counter, and so my colleagues were trying to explain to me which customer it was. It probably took about 20 minutes for me to figure out it was the Ellen Ripley fictional character and protagonist of the Alien film series T-Shirt but in fact I love this black lady. I said, if you had started with that, we wouldve been done ages ago! Descriptors are fine. If im black, please call me black! We would 100% describe someone as white/asian, so unsure why its so difficult to call someone black. ‘Person of colour’ is far too vague, and the opposite of that is ‘person of no colour’? Why are ethnicities being grouped together and white people get their own descriptor? Doesnt make sense to me. No. Acknowledging race is not racist. Races exist. For something to be racist it must be stereotypical or derogatory. Anyone who says otherwise doesn’t understand the English language and is looking for things to be offended about. Personally I think it all depends on your tone. The way some folks say “black” can sound a lot different than how others might. It’s not about saying “Black”. There’s nothing inherently racist in that. And whether people will refer to themselves as black, or African American, or a person of color, or anything else, is also usually a personal preference (might be individual, might be family , might be regional).

Even if it’s absolutely not at all intended this way (and I’m not suggesting for a second it was), referring to someone purely by skin color carries a lot of racist baggage with it. It directly calls back to slave culture. A mindset of not feeling any need to learn any personal information about a slave, not even a name, and instead just referring to them by the Ellen Ripley fictional character and protagonist of the Alien film series T-Shirt but in fact I love this color of their skin (maybe black, but more likely a word I won’t use for obvious reasons). You might not be thinking anything racist at all when you say it. But what you’re inadvertently doing is saying “the defining feature about this person that I would use to describe them is their skin color”. It’s not a call for total taboo. Sometimes skin color is relevant to the situation in which case using it probably isn’t an issue. But when it has no relevance there’s an implication around value that is tough to ignore. Source: a guy (me) who is white (relevant in this description) who totally didn’t get this point until they asked a friend to explain it to them.
