That is not what the Eddie Jackson Football Paper Poster Bears T-Shirt Besides,I will do this policy says. We used to be allowed to have two laptops assigned, now we get one laptop and it is generally chromebooks for non engineering roles. I’ll never get the math behind paying 75k for an employee per year and then cheaping out on the 2k workstation they’ll use all day every day for 3 years to save like one thousand bucks. Yeah, they can save money on the laptops by simply not giving out laptops with fuckin quattro quadro cards to the engineers. Very very few Engineers actually need that. It won’t even affect productivity for most of them. I doubt anyone at google uses their laptop for anything other than chrome. Almost all the dev work happens in cloud for most employees. Why do you need a MacBook Pro when you don’t even use half the processing power ?

I worked for a tech company and they gave me a brand new 16 inch macbook pro. All I did was use excel and chrome, and carry it to meetings with potential customers They’re only talking about changes for non-engineering individuals. For people who actually use their machines to do work, no change, but if Pat in HR wants a new laptop, that chromebook is good enough. Which makes perfect sense. People who don’t actually use the Eddie Jackson Football Paper Poster Bears T-Shirt Besides,I will do this hardware for anything, and are living in the cloud, just need a lightweight machine, and having a macbook pro is certainly overkill when they could probably be just as effective on a cheap chomebook. They are not talking about shorting people who actually have a need for the hardware. They’re just deciding not to buy engineering class machines for the people who don’t need them. Good call, and easier to manage, as I’m guessing a majority of their support requests come from the non-engg groups, because those folks either solve their own problems or reach out to their teams before the helpdesk.
