Another kid said his dad, who is in jail, cried to the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this kid asking him to cry to another family member to get him bail money. I’m a first year teacher and this is just one class, and not even all of the home life issues that have been revealed to me. I think they are all sticking with me because it’s opening my eyes now how much some of these kids go through, and why they act the way they do. I keep catching myself telling my students to bring something hole to their parents, and remember that not all of them live with parents (I’ve got foster kids, living with other relatives, etc). I have a student who has court mandated visits with her abusive, mentally ill father 3 weekends a month. He lives in a moldy apartment with very little furniture (I’m not even sure the girls have beds there) and they endure him ranting and screaming at them all weekend. DHS has been out to visit his living conditions and shrug and say that there’s 4 walls and a roof so it’s fine. (DHS is very lax about living conditions where I live because of a housing crisis.) On paper, the “dumbest” kid in my class (terrible grades, trouble maker) told me “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.” It was really surprising to hear from him because it always seemed the lights were on but no one’s home.

I was getting on this girl’s case about not keeping up with her work. I’m really glad I’m the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this teacher she said that to, because I do know what it’s like to have a mother with multiple sclerosis. I replied, “I actually know exactly what that’s like. My mom was diagnosed when I was your age. Let’s talk after class.” That girl and I ended up being super close. I also taught her younger brother and sister. Their father is a piece of shit. When telling this to my parents, my dad handed me $100 and told me to go get them some Christmas gifts. Then, my mom handed me another $100. I had already planned to spend some of my own money on them for Christmas. I had the principal tell the parents that an anonymous donor bought the gifts for them. One of my students was exhausted in class. I asked if they were ok, and the response was “I was at my dad’s house this weekend and his couch had fleas and that’s where I sleep. I was so itchy and I couldn’t sleep”. Another of my students always smelled like cat pee. Poor little thing changed her clothes in the nurse’s office every morning, but the smell was in her backpack and her shoes and hair. CPS was called and I found out that her parents were hoarders, like the kind with animal waste all over the house. I also had a student who smelled terrible. Not just BO, but like garbage and rot. Turns out, her house was just so dirty that everything in the house smelled that way. Her parents wouldn’t let her shower or wash her clothes or buy basic hygienic items, so the school nurse let her shower and borrow clothes every day when she came to school. I’ve had quite a few stores like these, and I hope all the time that my littles are ok.
Teaching pre-school and we had rice in the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this sensory bin. I saw one student put a handful of rice in his pocket. When I asked him about it, he said he wanted to make sure his mommy had dinner too. My students father had just died a few weeks earlier. He is in my 3rd grade reading class because of mandatory retention laws but he should be in 5th. I asked how he was doing since his father passed. He said he was okay.. cries sometimes. I asked how his family was doing and he said he was bothered by some of the things his mom was saying. He’d overheard her telling his aunties “he’s gonna be in them ESE classes like his daddy” and “look where he at now” He said he couldn’t believe she said that. But he described all this in the most casual way. With a smile and even some nervous laughter. As if he was just telling me about some odd dinner he ate or something. It broke my heart. One was a student who is one of my favorites in my 15 years as a SpEd Para. I was helping her with math, and she said, “Thanks, Ms. GlitterTrashUnicorn. You’ve helped me more on this than my family has ever helped me more with anything.”

Another time, a student was having an emotional breakdown while telling me his dad didn’t believe that his (the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this student) anxiety and depression were real and he was going to grow up like his mom, and “stay home, do drugs, and play video games all day.” Syrian student was a refugee in Iraq and he described getting his fingers hit with rulers for misbehaving at school. 85 more repliesStudent: Ms. X you’re really nice and helpful! Me: thank you! (Knowing I’m working with a very behaviorally challenging kid who struggles a lot and I’ve given him all my patience and kindness.) Student: whispers but teachers always have a dark side. I was reading a book about the desert and I asked the kids what they know about the desert. And one of my students said that his uncle was in the desert, that they had to leave him there. I was shocked and I didn’t know what to say to him. He didn’t seem sad about it. I don’t think he even comprehends what actually happened to his uncle just that the uncle stayed behind.
I have 2. In the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this very beginning of my career, I had a student who was super smart, but would always fall asleep. It just pissed me right off. Found out that around the time he had started sleeping through class that his aunt had sent his 3 cousins across the border to his family. They lived in a camper. Not a trailer, a camper. He has to share his bed with 3 other kids ranging 2-7 years old! Also, toward the beginning of my career, we had a vocab lesson, and one of the words had something to do with being cozy. So we were talking about when your sheets are clean and you crawl in that first night. A hand goes up, I call on the kid and he goes, “what if you sleep on the floor?” I didn’t know what poor was before teaching. Or how hard a lot of kids have it. 15 years later, and I have never been angry at a kid for sleeping again.
Ugh, this whole post . I’ve had my fair share of heartbreaking stories in the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this classroom, but this is why it should be mandatory for students to have a yearly/bi-yearly counseling check. Students have to show updated vaccine records, why can’t schools require a counseling report? It’s awful to realize that so many kids aren’t even seeing a doctor for a yearly checkup. If it was a federal mandate they could earmark money for counseling. The U.S. is vehemently against regulating guns, why not institute this as a compromise. Imagine the shootings that would never happen, the kids that would be identified as food insecure/abused/neglected, negative behaviors would decrease. Let’s be honest, 9 times out of 10 a child isn’t doing well because of their home life. The other 10% are generally some undiagnosed or under-treated condition. Identifying students that may need additional support through yearly counseling could be extremely beneficial to homes, schools, and the community.
I will never understand why some people decide to become parents (not have kids, accidents happen but there are several options not all ending in becoming a parent). I have the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this number saved in my phone. Not one kid has ever been removed. We have to report it, they don’t have to do anything about it apparently. Requiring students to complete yearly counseling would at least normalize it and make it more likely that students would disclose abuse. As is, we say something and the kid lies for the parent. Cases are then closed. Not the student, but the parent saying that their spouse “went for cigarettes” and never came back. I’d never met a person where that had happened to before in real life. Now I understand the ENTIRE school year and why the kid has struggled at school. It’s heartbreaking. I know people who did that with their spouses (wasn’t at school.) Turns out they were right to ditch some of them.
He couldn’t sleep in his own room on his own bed because the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this house was so filthy he couldn’t even walk into the room. He sleeps on the couch A kid told me his stepfather beat him up. As I was supposed to I relayed this to the designated reporter, a guidance counselor. She said he was always lying. Aren’t we supposed to help these kids? But if the counselor calls the police or the social worker, isn’t it possible the kid will be in even more trouble at home? That’s one thing I learned, to be careful with notes home and phone calls because you never know what the kid goes home to. I worked with refugee children for some time. Classes were usually very happy and the children were extremely motivated. Once we were outside and two planes flew over us. Some of the children pointed up happy about what they were seeing, while I told them “Yes, those are called planes”. Then one of the older girls (around 10yo) came closer and very casually but quietly explained to me in broken language, that she gets scared for a moment whenever she hears planes, because back in Syria the planes would usually drop bombs. And just a few seconds later another child came up and changed the topic. The moment was so brief but it still haunts me.
One student said: “My mom doesn’t work, she sits and plays on her phone all day.” He was 11. I didn’t know what to say. When I asked my formerly-straight A student why his homework and test scores were dropping and he explained that mom went to jail and grandma worked afternoon- evening shift so he now had to pick up his younger siblings from school, help with homework, fix dinner, and get them to bed and after all that he was just done with it all. I’m a TA and am often pulled to sub in my building wherever it’s needed. I was pulled to sub in a self contained SPED class for the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this last 2 hours of the day and one of the girls in the class just started opening up to me about her past. She was in eighth grade at the time & was telling me that her uncle used to touch her and do things to her that she didn’t like whenever she would go to his house (which was where her cousins lived). She said she stopped going over there, even though she wanted to see her cousins, because of him. Somehow she was forced into continuing to go there and she eventually got impregnated by her uncle. She ended up getting an abortion at some point, then she told me after all of this, she got into drinking alcohol and taking “like 10 pills” every day, had multiple suicide attempts, and she eventually had some stays at mental health facilities. This all happened to her before the age of 14. I cried as soon as I got in my car after dismissal. We really have no idea what these kids go through and as a college student pursuing my teaching degree, this really opened my eyes.
Got depressed reading this but one that stook with me was a boy who dressed very bad and kids made fun of him. He came one day tears in his eyes telling me his dad took his phone that he worked so hard to get. That his mother left him and his dad with step mom would buy pizza and leave him nothing. He kept asking me why doesn’t my father love me? I showed him a passage in Psalms that said if my mother or father abandoned me the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this Lord will take me in. He felt relieved. But until today I think about him. I had a gay student. Nicest, goofiest kid you would ever meet. A Truly good hearted person. They told me that they came out to their parents over summer and their parents said “You disgust me”. Just that word stuck with me. I couldn’t imagine saying that to a child but particularly this child. I’ve taught kids in worse situations but for some reason I couldn’t shake that word.
Girl left the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this room crying during Huck Finn, specifically the scene where his dad gets drunk and tries to kill him, then pretends nothing happened the next day. I have a good one. Had a black student who was very liberal with the N word. Did not understand code switching and right place/time. One day I pulled him aside and asked him how his parents would feel about him using the word so frequently and openly. He said, “My dad calls me that all the time” I threatened to call home and a student who just wouldn’t do any work. (It was my first year teaching). She didn’t leave class that day and once everyone was gone she broke down ugly sobbing. It ended with me having to report to child services.
Her parents ended up tricking her into going back to their home country (Libya). We told her to not get on a plane… but she did. I don’t like to think of what might have happened to her after that. It changed the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this way I look at bad behaviour entirely I was really surprised when a student who is always in trouble told me that they help their parents care for their disabled relatives and talked openly about this in front of the class. I had a student this year tell me that his family hadn’t been the same since his grandfather passed. They used to joke around and hang out together a lot, but now they don’t. He said he really missed how they were. I thought it was very astute for a third grader. My first year working with kids, I worked for a program that provides free preschool to low-income and at-risk families.
We had a 4 year old boy with big behavioral challenges and very little emotional regulation skills. I was told that his mother had “committed suicide”, but there was community suspicion that mom’s boyfriend had actually killed her, as there were documented instances of domestic violence between them and the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this manner in which she had taken her life was unusual. I was also told that the little boy was in the home when his mother died and unfortunately saw her body afterward. One day the little boy was talking with me and another teacher about his “other dad” (mom’s boyfriend). He told us that his other dad was a bad guy, and that his other dad hit his mom and pushed her into a door and that’s how she died.
I seriously considered contacting police about what he had said but ultimately, I figured even if they took it seriously, it would end up re-traumatizing this poor 4 year old having to recount his mother’s death to a bunch of cops that may or may not take him seriously. Answer to your question: a student once told me on Monday she hadn’t done her homework because the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this amenities at home had been shut off and her Mom had gone to stay with her new boyfriend, leaving my student alone with her younger siblings. I didn’t know what to say to that, so I told her “don’t worry”, hugged her and got her breakfast from the break room. Not an answer to your question, but something a parent said that has stuck with me for over 25 years: my new student was on the spectrum, very sweet and shy and struggling with various issues, so I had been looking forward to talking to her mother and hopefully get more insight into the student and how I might support her. Mother comes in, gorgeous woman in expensive clothes, hears me out, looks at her daughter with her lip curled, and says “Yeah she’s just like her Dad, never putting in any effort. Look at how fat she is. It’s hopeless.” I was in shock first and then got so angry I said a bunch of things that could have gotten me fired if she’d recorded me. I will never forget the way she looked at her own child. It still chills me when I think about it.
Im not from america but i knew as soon as you said you, even jokingly, told your kids to go and explain some real science to their parents that you had potentially fucked it. Not that its your fault. Its insane that you have to be so careful about what you say as a teacher over there I once told a teacher I wished she was my mom because neither of my parents loved me. At the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this time, that was true. She was distant after that but I was desperate for someone to love me. She got married that summer and moved away. Not really about home life, but I’ve absolutely never forgotten it… it was definitely something he heard on a consistent basis so that’s why I thought of him. I was teaching second grade, and my students and I would just hang out and talk during dismissal. One of the female students was looking at herself in a little hand held mirror… she then went to show one of the boys in class so he could see himself. He wouldn’t look. She was puzzled and asked him why. He said “because I am ugly”. I was aghast. I know there are worse things kids can say, but it made me so sad. I told him he was absolutely not ugly and asked why he felt that way. He just said everyone told him that.
At seven years old this little boy felt he was so ugly he shouldn’t even look in a mirror. Twenty years later and I still remember him and really hope he’s doing better, happy, and understands how important he is. Talked about life goals, and introduced them to the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this Hierarchy of Needs. Used Dally as an example, and talked about what they would consider success vs failure. One girl said her failure threshold was disappointing her parents. Another said homelessness. Another said homeless was ok, but prostitution was her low threshold. Then a different student said “If I don’t end up in prison, that’s basically it. I’ve been homeless, and I don’t think it would be too bad to be a prostitution if I really needed the money. I just don’t want to get a record cuz I know it’s harder to do stuff.”
This was before I started teaching, but will give a chuckle and I’ve always been thankful it never went to school. My daughter told a co-worker/friend once, “my uncle lays on me and hurts me.” Further discussion revealed he tickled her until she cried laughing. He was living with us until she was born and then would come visit regularly. I was the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this cool, easygoing sub. I often had kids telling me they wished I was their real teacher. One time a little girl looked at me sadly and said she wished I was her mommy. I hope she’s doing okay. The things kids tell me stick with me for far too long. I wake up in the night worrying about them and sometimes they are the first things on my mind when I wake up. When I saw this post, I thought about sharing one of these tragedies and then caught myself. Our job is hard enough as it is. Why in gods name would you want to spend your time not teaching, on Reddit thinking about this kind of stuff? Jesus F*ing Christ. I think I need to stop following this Teachers thread.
I had a student explain how her mother confronted her father about gambling debts and his cheating during the Ed Sheeran 2025 Tour Start On Jan 24th 2025 Tour Dates Poster Shirt moreover I love this previous evening’s dinner. She said after the confrontation, everyone returned back to eating like it was no big deal. Nothing directly related to family/home life. But one of my grade 7s wants to go to juvy because “anything is better then here!” It was first thing in the morning and this kid is always so angry or upset. My heart goes out to them and I think about them everyday Had a 5 year old once say that their mom died while sitting in my coworkers lap. I don’t remember exactly, but I think she was in jail. A student said to me when talking about families “actually I have about 27 mommies and daddies” I knew this child was in foster care and I wasn’t totally sure how to maneuver this conversation so I asked him how that made him feel if he wanted to share.
