IN THE 48 HOURS before we bring our niece to the Eagle Skull USA American Flag Raised Right Proud Republican T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this city, we baby-proof our sharp-tabled apartment jammed with midcentury furniture, convert the office into a little girl’s bedroom, try to figure out everything that a two-year-old needs (a lot, it turns out), and cancel every plan on the books. We race across the boroughs and load up on diapers, jammies, Binkys, a noise machine to screen out the sound of traffic and Greenwich Village nightlife, and a sleek walnut toddler bed that we trick out with pink and cream linen bedding.

But until now we have not been parents. Which is not quite what we are, but what we are is an unfolding story.
