You would be not with the times if you wondered why cats stayed indoors. It was a random throwaway comment designed to bait people into going easy on me for being stupid if they were prone to calling me a dumbass or something – just a low level manipulation tactic – it’s basically lorem ipsum For me, at least, it’s just cause the cat never wanted to come inside. It’s possible that if we had forced her, she would have gotten used to it eventually. But we didn’t really see a need to force her. She had her own fenced-in deck that was covered, and only she could get in and out of it. If it was cold, we’d let her in, but she never wanted to stay in. It’s also worth mentioning that we got her from the pound as an adult, and she was found in a wooded area. So, I just assume she was a wild cat originally. After losing our first outdoor cat, we kept our next ones inside. Now we have a fenced in catio that’s connected to our office. Closed up once it becomes dark or snowy so they can be protected

Once they have a sense of ‘this is my home’, they’re usually pretty trainable about wandering around and returning. I think the chances of a cat you see being missing are slim. And if you have doubts, check out local social media groups, most have a specific group even for missing animals. Mine were indoor only for a long time until I had a roommate who had a kid who didn’t know how to close doors. So they became indoor/outdoor and I saw them thrive and be happier and healthier. It gives me a lot of anxiety because I know the risks, but they’d never accept being indoor only again.
