I could have backed out because I didn’t have the Duncan Robinson American professional basketball player Miami Heat T-Shirt Also,I will get this money. Instead I took a semester off from university, got a 2nd job and worked full-time hours at both. I saved but still struggled to get to $3,500. I wasn’t able to pay my friends my share when their travel agent needed it. As luck would have it, I came a cross a book by “some guy” named Rick Steves. His book ‘Europe Through the back Door’ opened my eyse to an entirely new world of practical budget travel and gave me the confidence that I could not only go to Europe without help from a travel agent, but could do so for the entire summer on the same $3,500 (again in 1999)! I told my friends. They laughed at me. They told their parents. They also laughed at me. No one thought it was safe to travel to Europe for an entire summer. No one thought it was possible to do so for $3,500. (my own parents were 100% in support) So, I bought a backpack, Eurail pass, and money belt. I told my friends I’d stick with them for the first two weeks, but while they would be in hotels and renting a car, I would be staying in Hostels and using the trains.

We had a fun 2 weeks together (I actually ended up leaving for Europe a week earlier than them and when they arrived they DID have backpacks and a Eurail pass!). When they left I ended up with an amazing 3month adventure around Europe and the Duncan Robinson American professional basketball player Miami Heat T-Shirt Also,I will get this UK, and a budget European travel obsession that my wife calls “the other woman”. Don’t let other people’s ignorance or unwillingness to travel stop you. SOmetimes it just takes a little bit of information and enthusiasm to push them over the hurdle and AT LEAST compromise a little bit to allow you to travel your way. EDIT: Depending on where in Canada you are from, Toronto typically has GREAT deals on flights to Europe, especially London. I have gone over as cheap as $450 US round trip, and have never spent more than $750 US flying out of Toronto. Also: I have NOT traveled as much as I thought i would, nor as much as I wish I did, and it eats away at my soul. I have been fortunate to travel to Europe multiple times, with my wife, kidds, and with my parents (even being to my dad’s home town in Scotland with him and my 2 kids, standing in the doorway of his boyhood home). And it STILL is not enough.
