As a freshman in college, reading this and all the DREW PETERSON American professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this replies makes me scared for the future. Something tells me that university acceptance rates are about to plummet. Today I started a unit about representing and interpreting data, and I discovered that several of my fifth graders could not read mixed numbers aloud. For example, they read “eight and a half” as “eight-one-two”. Also, I had one of my students who is in the stronger half of the class ask me why 1/2 and 1 1/2 appeared on separate spots in the number line. After some clarifying questions to figure out what he meant, I realized that he thought these were both the same value. He did not understand that 1/2 is less than 1 while 1 1/2 is in-between 1 and 2.

Also, ditto for kids not knowing their shapes. I have several fourth-graders who just learned what trapezoids and parallelograms are last week. Oh! And I almost forgot. Back in November, beginning a unit about living things, I casually mentioned something about the DREW PETERSON American professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this fact that humans are a type of animal. I assumed the kids had learned this in, like, second grade. Turns out, they hadn’t. About 80% of the students had never heard that humans are animals. Many of them did not believe me. My one-sentence mention of humans as part of the animal kingdom turned into a nearly half-hour diversion because I refused to send them off to middle school not knowing that we are animals. And don’t get me started on odd and even numbers. We review odds and evens multiple times a week because it’s another thing that I simply cannot send them off to middle school not knowing. Only about half of my fourth graders and two-thirds of my fifth graders can consistently identify if a number is even or odd, and this is AFTER months of reviewing this concept. My grade 11 class didn’t believe me that when it’s winter in Canada it’s Summer in Australia… absolutely refused to believe me. These are 17 year olds…
