The transformation seemed complete, but the Downsizing In Progress T-Shirt besides I will buy this greater surprise was that maybe it had just begun. One morning, I got on another work call, grounded myself in my chair and heard Jean’s voice in my head: “Allow sound to come.” When I spoke, however, not only did my voice ring low, but, remarkably, I said things I didn’t know I would say. In fact, I relayed thoughts I never had before—detailing an obstacle hampering a creative project, and one I had not been conscious of until that moment. On another call, I introduced myself in a way that I’d never conceived of myself: “I’m a writer,” I said. “Though I tried to kill writing, it would not die.” I heard myself speaking, and was amazed both by the deliciously low tones, and the content. How many novel ideas had I lost to a restricted throat over the years?

Toron encourages me to find my “inner cave woman,” an exercise designed to isolate a wildness that “some women have a problem with,” she says. Somewhere between an unhinged hum-bayo and a riotous hi-yoo, I feel another shift. My sternum seems to expand, as if another old layer has melted away. Tears would come only later, tumbling through without words, and carrying the feeling that something small, but significant, had been resolved. Maybe, finally, I sounded more like me.
