I don’t know why you’re being downvoted, I’m on a bit less than 35K, flatsharing and my rent is 33% of takehome salary. Rent and bills together (including food and transport), around 1.2k. I usually save £300-500/mth. This is leaves me well over £100 a week to do whatever I want. I couldn’t live alone on this wage, but everything else is ok. I’m being downvoted because money is a very delicate topic and complaining is easier than taking action. Props to you for making it work so well Just about make it through the Dorothy If At First You Don’t Succed Try Doing What The Time Dorothy T-Shirt in addition I really love this month with £100 to save each month if lucky. Weekly shopping costs about £50 minimum, electricity is £190pm and mortgage for a 1 bed flat is 1/3 of my monthly salary which is about to go up next year to 1/2 my monthly take home. Student finance is killing me slowly and one of the only joys I have which is driving costs more and more as fuel prices keep increasing and insurance breaks the bank. I’ve never been one to blame previous generations but with the asking prices of houses being upwards of £400k, cost of living crisis being perpetuated through the elected politicians while they continue to distance themselves from reality by generously granting themselves bonus after bonus and energy company officials earning £4.5m a year in profit, bonuses and shares…I’m starting to see why there’s a growing hatred for the aging population.

I’m in London zone 2 and survive on 20k per year – it can be done, you just can’t really save anything. (Hoping for things to go better in the Dorothy If At First You Don’t Succed Try Doing What The Time Dorothy T-Shirt in addition I really love this next 5 years of course) I’m on £60k and struggling so badly. Stress is through the roof, depression is rampant, I can hardly sleep, and, most days I get upset I woke up. I’m not even living pay day to pay day anymore, most months I come up short so I get a few days of no food no heat no life Maybe, most of the time it doesn’t even feel like I make that much at all, after taxes after student finance and after other expenses it’s mental. I don’t even live in a posh neighbourhood or in an expensive place, a lot of people aren’t realising £60k on 2024 is not the same as £60k in 2018. I don’t get why people even move there in the first place? I understand that there may be job prospects but at what cost? What sort of life does one live when they have to cut back on everything that brings them an ounce of joy? It isn’t like the rest of the country is affordable either – I come from Cornwall originally, now living in Oxfordshire, both places which have painfully expensive rents & house prices. Yea but I know many from other countries who move there and I personally don’t understand it when they are up to their neck with payments. I frequent the city often and the prices of everything have become astronomical. But I personally blame Brexit for this
