Punishment and penalty is not the Don’t Mess With Old People We Didnt Get To This Age By Being Stupid T-Shirt moreover I love this prime reason for the low crime rate. Other countries with way harsher penalties have more crime. It’s the fundamentally collectivist society, honor culture, social stigma etc. that actually makes crime so low. Honestly, if you feel Osaka is safe to walk around alone, which is objectively true, then there’s nowhere more dangerous in Japan. I don’t think it’s as simple as the harsh penalties. Their whole society is based around rigid adherence to rules and hierarchy. It’s hard to fathom that Wesley was like 14-15 years old at the time. Japan was heavily influenced by the same value system over the centuries. To them the pettiness of the theft makes it even worse because he is in a position of authority that would normally afford him a degree of deference but also comes with a higher expectation for him to set an example for those below. He hasn’t just stolen $3, he has betrayed the social trust of his position.
