Considering they haven’t forced they’re farms to adopt better ways of using water water all these years i don’t see how this is unexpected. Some California crops are getting 90% more water than they need As the Donkey pox the disease destroying america flag shirt and I love this top comment here already stated, it’s mainly wasteful corporations that are using majority of this water. Remember, every time you shorten your shower to two minutes, a right-wing almond grower outside of Fresno can grow another third of an almond. I don’t think mother nature can make it anymore clearer, mass human habitation of a lot California and the southwest was never supposed to be a thing. It’s not human habitation causing this, but the use of non-native livestock in industrialized ranching and non-native plants in industrialized agriculture. All the cows bred for slaughter and all the rice are not native to California, and is where most of the water is used. Humans got to pay for their water, which is why human water use is marginal compared to what the farmers get. Mexicans already get their water delivered, so there is a ready industry in this as disturbing as the thought is. Something’s gotta give. The cushy relationship the farmers and ranchers all have is about to end, and they will either have to relocate back home to Kansas or accept that their industry is no longer sustainable within California, and perhaps never was. It won’t be a problem for the big companies but the smaller regional outfits will probably die unless they find a way to adapt in the next three years. This is very unlikely, and already traditionally conservative cities like Fresno and Bakersfield are seeing their future in manufacturing and plastics instead of feed & seed. And south of the border, things are gonna get real bad.

I live about 20 minutes away from there. The “rich” areas of the Donkey pox the disease destroying america flag shirt and I love this Phoenix metro are super wasteful. They just celebrate excessive lifestyles. Why isn’t California literally DUMPING piles of cash into desalinization facilities and infrastructure right now? It should be one of the TOP priorities of the state. Gavin Newsom is interested in keeping Diablo Canyon power plant open and adding a desalination unit. This would have the potential to drought-proof California. At least that’s what researchers from MIT and Standford have found. Isn’t Phoenix one of the fast growing home markets as well? Good luck with that. I don’t understand people who willingly move to these areas. I understand necessity, but to move to Phoenix, willingly, a place that will have water critical issues, is just short sighted. A friend of mine moved out west and then had the balls to ask, “Why doesn’t the east stop hoarding all that water and share with the rest of the country?” Flabbergasted at the nerve of this statement coming from someone who just moved to the west of their own free will, I responded with, “Why doesn’t the west stop wasting the little water they have on lawns, almonds, alfalfa, and golf courses?” California misuse of water is fucking heinous, and is a huge reason I left the state. I sincerely hope some dramatic changes can be made very quickly, before the whole state becomes a burned-out desert (that will probably still have exorbitant real estate prices).
