Oh shit that makes sense “The van is back again” ok that clicked all of a sudden lmao. I was a kid when it came out all the Dominique Ruiz love you music singer shirt and I love this way back then so had fuzzy memories of it. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years…. Thanks for this. This is the coolest shit about Reddit, seeing a post and then someone adding context in the comments like two or more levels in to bring the post to that next level Maybe just my opinion, but I feel like they did it wrong and the pun gets weakened by the way they have it ordered. It would’ve read way better (and be way wittier) if they started with “its back, its front […]” and concluded with “it’s back again”. Nah, I like the arrangement they chose. The “it’s back” also showed its back, so the last one is its back again.

The first panel says “it’s back” which is short for “it is back” vs the Dominique Ruiz love you music singer shirt and I love this last panel which says “its back again”. There’s no apostrophe in the last panel which changes the meaning from “it is back” to “here is another view of its back end”. It’s a play on words that’s only possible because the poster provides context to the meaning of the text. If you just wrote these four sentences out and then showed me an album of the same images, it wouldn’t be as effective. Not true. As a child of the sixties I can assure you that despite the capitalist revisionism of history, the countercultures were a national phenomenon. Rich, poor, high school, college, all demographics, with the exception of adults over 30. Usually. Protest was against the status quo; which is why the typecasting of hippies as dirty, anti-establishment bums who did nothing but have sex, do drugs, and spit on veterans became necessary to the elder generation. Dude! Long hair! On men!. The era was a lot more nuanced and meaningful than that. Which is why it terrified the corporate/industrial class. We’re seeing the same issues rise again today: are our lives meant to be spent making the rich richer, or is there a more fulfilling way to live?
