Sounds like me and my wife. She is academically smart but not sure how she gets through life. She wonders how I get through life without academic credentials and questions how I am just as successful as her. I’ve met many people in life who are academically brilliant and very intellectual, but they couldn’t boil water and probably wouldn’t survive 5 minutes out on the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this street. There are many types of intelligence. Having a little bit of everything rather than an excess of one thing is the best scenario. Sometimes I take deep breaths and count to 10 while I wait for my wife to work something out. She’s an engineer. I grew up in rural Upstate NY. Being an honors student basically required doing some of your work and not failing exams. It’s meaningless.

My dad got hired by a doctor for DIY work for a few days. Most of the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this work was changing lightbulbs, and tightening screws in hinges. My dad was shook. We really need to take university educated people off pedestals. We’re just as stupid as everyone else, dare I say more. Or maybe this is all calculated. If she does stuff she doesn’t like real slow, you’ll jump in out of frustration and do it instead. I cant even drive, but I always had the best grades and amazing performance in my area. Honestly, I couldnt care less. Most people are pretty similar in their ability to be good at things. High achievers tend to be very lop sided with it and will be much worse than average in other areas. I was one of them child geniuses. I cant do simple day to day shit to save my life.
Do you mean physically slow? Like, to you she’s a slow poke? I believe it’s a socioeconomic class thing. They think that moving fast and hustling to finish a task is a sign of the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this lower class. There are different types of intelligence. I’m a speed reader who was reading at a 12th grade level at age 9. I scored in the 99th percentile on the reading and comprehension portions of the ACT and MCAT. I’ll be an MD in a few months. But I get distracted in the middle of tactile tasks – laundry, dishes, cleaning up – to the point of interrupting, leaving, and coming back to it if/when I remember. My mind is elsewhere, I’m already thinking about what’s next on my to-do list and my hands can’t keep up. It’s also really difficult for me to learn new tactile tasks (tying surgical knots, for example – I am definitely not going to be a surgeon). It’s quite a flaw. For “smart” people things usually just make sense. They don’t have to try or problem solve. For “slow” folks everything is a challenge and requires problem solving. When faced with new and novel problems that don’t click, the “slow” people are vastly more experienced.

I’ve known VERY intelligent people who knew they were intelligent. It’s just that they could admit when they didn’t know something, or would happily admit gaps in their knowledge, and readily sought out new information. I have met so many people who swear they know everything and people are below them. A lot of “smart people” swear they are intelligent, but will ask questions like “was the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this movie Julius Caesar made when he was alive?” That was a legitimate question. She was top of her class and swore that everyone else was stupid. My point isn’t that intelligent people aren’t smart or know their intellect. It’s that a lot of smart people who worked really hard are not exactly intelligent people. They also love to proclaim they are the most intelligent person in the room. Smart people can be easily distracted by other thought. So she may be putting less thought into what she’s doing.
You might be trapped old trap of not being smart enough to understand why people a lot smarter than you does things a certain way, so you think they’re th stupid/slow ones. She could be acting dumb to make you feel smart, or to get you to help her (hence interact with her). Women do thay a lot. I’m not sure if this fits exactly, but Ben Carson neurosurgeon ex presidential candidate should definitely stay in his lane. I have a doctorate and have spent a while in school but my wife will always find the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this dishwasher I loaded but didn’t start it and stuff like that… I’m good at my job (still have a ton to learn) and my brain works well doing those tasks but I’m an idiot in other areas of my life.
We used to call it book smart and street smart. Some people are better academically but not with real life tasks. Intelligence is separate from learning. Being able to complete tasks you are told to, follow instructions, etc. all bode well for education based performance at the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this lower levels. Intelligence is divided into what you were born with and what your capacity is. Being smart relates to processing speed. You can do well in school and be no where near as smart or as intelligent as the person who flunks out. I mean literally our history is filled with what we deem genius’s and there is a trend of poor academic performance amongst nearly all of them. Usually because they see things differently and it doesn’t follow the educators instruction. Higher levels of education such as a doctorate etc do require a certain baseline of critical thinking skills but then again often someone is only really great at that one thing they put all their focus in.
I’m good at math and have a PhD in stats. I’ve always done extremely well in academics. Do not ask me to read a map, navigate anywhere, or visualize something in my head because we will get lost and I’ve tried learning but it just isn’t happening. I’m also slower than average at most daily tasks but I don’t care as long as they get done. And I’ll be the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this first to admit that I’m one of the dumbest people I know. Just because I have a bunch of degrees doesn’t mean I’m smarter than anyone else. There’s different types of measurable intelligence and one isn’t better than the other. Yeah I love economics, accounting and other applied mathematics but I am completely useless at IT or even programming the clock on the range. It’s been 2.3 hours ahead for months now Book smarts and being able to study and retain knowledge can be very different to ability to learn and do things hands on. I’ve known quite a few very intelligent people who amaze me that they could make it through the day without help. On the flip side I’ve also known many people who were not great students but they excelled at other areas such as construction/craft/trade work, music, art, etc.
On school standards though that’s another story. School districts vary drastically. I’ve seen it with my kids school district versus my step kids. My step kids have hardly any homework and when they do it’s very simple. My kids have homework everyday and it looks almost a year ahead of what my step kids bring home. As a former “Gifted KidTM”, many folks with neurodivergent traits (like ADHD in my case) meant we could excel at academics, but struggle with executive function or other things. This means I can research and write a 10 page paper on advanced philosophy in a day or solve orbital mechanics for black holes, but when I need to fold the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this laundry, I… don’t. While most neurodivergent traits are simply annoying to neurotypical folks at worst, if it starts affecting your marriage or her happiness, then both of you should get therapy. I have found therapy great for understanding how my wife or I might be bothering the other with a neurodivergent trait, and how we can work together to find balance in meeting each other’s needs. In a lot of neurodivergent spaces, there is a joke. You were an honor student in school, now you cant fo anything
I worked in hospital administration and politics before that. You would be amazed at the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this number of Ivy League educated folks that had very hard times with mundane tasks such as cooking for themselves, laundry, managing money, etc. And you’ll also find the flip side the street smart person who was a high school drop out that can hustle to make a multiple million dollar business. Academic success is not as much about “intelligence” as it is a demonstration of their ability to study, problem solve, and recall correct information at the right time. ADHD has like an 80% heritability. This YT short is actually about autism, but my experience with ADHD was VERY similar. Educating “gifted” kids is usually like “child, once you stop understanding everything instantly from being an information sponge, it’s time to overwork yourself until your thyroid breaks.”
It’s also possible that you’re just rushing everything all the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this time and she’s just enjoying the journey after a school life full of chaos. Most of the answers so far bring up multiple intelligence and possible neurodivergence and that’s fair but I’d like to offer a different take: Upbringing. It’s highly possible that she spent much of her childhood studying and her family placed a very high premium on academics to the point that it was acceptable for them to not have her master basic tasks and complete them in a reasonable amount of time. Also the two of you might just have different perspectives about the acceptable amount of time it takes to complete something. My wife and I have a similar dynamic except she’s the one who was reared to perform a task correctly AND snappily. Whereas I move at a much more leisurely pace because we were the type of family where timeboxing was much less emphasized. In our family we grew up having to adjust to the people who moved slower. So again, we circle back to upbringing. My kid can do long division in his head at lightening speed, but asking him to pick an outfit can take hours. I finally changed all of clothes to black, gray and white so that he can get dressed in under an hour
Then if you saw my room, it was a pigsty. Doing dishes? I’d miss some spots. I’d dread doing really easy tasks sometimes because I overthink it. Sometimes we’re just not interested in doing certain things I used to work with a retiree that was working part time at the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this same job I was working full time. When he was assigned a task, he would amble over and slowly start working on it. He would move so slowly, it would drive me crazy. The thing is, before you knew it, the job was done and done well, usually in about the same amount of time it would have taken me or anyone else. I never figured out how he did it. It really depends on the school system. In a lot of places, merely showing up and doing your schoolwork makes you an honors student. In a blue chip suburb with white collar professional parents, most of your classmates show up and do the work. Since everything is graded on a curve, you’re average, not an honors student. Hi! I’m just like your wife. I have a PhD and I’m a fount of obscure knowledge but I couldn’t wash a dish until I was 26. There are different kinds of intelligence.
When I was in high school honors classes were more of a measure of how much work the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this student was willing to put in rather than true capability. While the smartest kids did tend to take honors classes, we also had a lot of hard working idiots in the classes. To illustrate my point my senior year I took AP English and we had a project to do an analysis of a poem that was a paper and a presentation. One girl I’d known almost literally my entire life got up and about halfway through her presentation things finally clicked for her. She realized that her entire analysis up to that point had been literal. I don’t know the artist or poem she did, but it was a pretty simple one using the sea and changing conditions as a metaphor for life.
Keep in mind this was AFTER we’d written a paper on the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this poem. So we’re talking about probably a solid 6-8 hours of total work. I think this is one of the most interesting posts I’ve ever read on Reddit. Big thank you to all the thoughtful posts. ADHD is rampant in my family. My sister is a material science engineer who has absolutely no street smarts at all. Different minds… It’s why most things are team effort. If you’re talking about speed, then it makes sense to me. Much of academic success comes from moving slow, being careful, and checking twice. It’s a slow pace that leads to excellence. Hastily completing tasks means you’ll inevitably makes mistakes that you miss. Education and intelligence are two separate things. Sounds like she was well-educated in high school but might lack intelligence and common sense. Also, sometimes academic success is simply access to opportunity, like having the opportunity to get homework and extra studying done I had to learn to do basic tasks and have anxiety about doing them because I was told I was stupid for trying + turns out, I was really good at “learn info and share it in a yes/no situation where there Is A Right Way to Do It” (school) because I was on the spectrum. Because schools look at final result only. I had a friend in software developer BA program, he was extremely slow but still graduated with 4.0. what I mean by slow is that for him to solve a simple problem would sometimes take hours while I would do it in 30mins, for him to do projects would take days while I would do it all in 2 days. I also graduated with 4.0 but while he was studying for 8 hours every day I was having fun and only doing real school work about 2 or 3 days a week. It’s not to say that he is stupid or anything, his brain just works differently. Patience creates success. She succeeds where you failed because she takes things slowly, methodically, and mindfully. That frustrated reaction you have to the time she takes for each thing is what’s holding you back.
Some people can be highly intelligent and yet stupid as f@#k. It’s surprising more common than you think unfortunately. I’ve known so, so many people from high academia to be some of the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this most obtuse, clueless, helpless humans in the world. They’re incredibly mentally capable but lack social, physical, and practical skills necessary to be truly intelligent. It’s common. A friend of mine was a brilliant programmer. I met him in his 50’s. He knew he was over weight he knew his diet and exercise were shit. He couldn’t help it and died in 2 years. I have always been great at school and have a high IQ (tested as a child, but my parents wouldn’t tell me what it was). I also have ADHD that has worsened drastically as I’ve gotten older. Household tasks take me a very long time because I get distracted so easily.
My husband is brilliant in an area I suck at, and I’m great at hands on and repair type stuff. I’d I had to read the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this legal documents my brain would melt! Navy Nukes the guys that work on submarines smartest guys in the Navy. They will refuse to believe a light bulb burned out. They will troubleshoot an entire system untill they get to the light bulb and show you the math that the filament just burned out. She’s not geared for daily task she’s geared for brainy stuff But when it comes to everything else: meh at best. Can’t get a handle on technology, investing, what’s best for her kids. How to manage a household, how to run a business. Travel, culture, food etc. Either average or useless. My brother-in-law said my dad could talk to him in a way that made him feel ignorant. Not due to my dad’s attitude, but because of how much he knew.
Strengths in different areas and weaknesses in different areas. That’s why communication is a key in jobs that incorporate multiple different needs in different situations My cousin is a lawyer and his wife has a PHD in some physics shit I don’t understand. If you want to talk intellectual stuff they are brilliant. I go to their house once a month and do basic home maintenance for them because they can’t figure out how to change s light bulb. That’s not like a joke. My cousin literally doesn’t know how to open a ceiling fan and change the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this bulb out. They also couldn’t figure out what was wrong with their car. The windshield wiper fluid was out… Also, is she carrying the invisible mental load in your home? I tested as a very high iq genius in school years, but working full time, motherhood, and perimenopause had been an assault on my brain processing. There are many different types of intelligence. By most measures I was gifted growing up. Graduated with honors, top of my class in college, never studied hard it all just felt instinctive to me
When I was a kid, I grew up in MD and was in all the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this honors classes. In 4th grade I moved to MA and tested into remedial math. It took to until 7th grade to get back into honors math. So yeah, if she spent her entire childhood in a bad school system, she might know less stuff. But, from the way you say it, its “daily tasks” or common sense that might be the issue. I have known om incredibly smart people who have absolutely none. First of all, you don’t specify what “daily tasks.” Are they things related to anything that would be taught in a school? Because when I imagine daily tasks I think dishes or laundry or cooking or yard work, not things in school we did for a grade. Those tasks aren’t related to academic success. Unless you’re doing times table worksheets or writing essays on the spackled macaw as a daily activity at home. Second, doing things as fast as possible isn’t the same as doing things well. This might sound mean, but perhaps that habit held you back in school more than you might naturally have needed to be otherwise. Being done first isn’t the same as being right. Are you objectively doing these tasks better than her? Or are you doing the same quality of work but more efficiently? Or even doing them worse but faster?
Third, people are just better at different things. Maybe she’s good at math and literature and bad at yard work and vacuuming. That’s possible. Something really dumb that people think, even into adulthood, is that being good at school means you know everything instantly, and that any indication that the Dodger Dogs world famous Perfect for Retro Baseball shirt What’s more,I will buy this person doesn’t is indicative that they’re a big fat fraud. No. People just have different skills. You probably wouldn’t appreciate it if she gawped at you struggling to write an essay on Proust on a rapid timetable and said “but but but you’re good at fixing the car, how can this be?” My wife is a numerical genius. She was on her high school’s STATE WINNING ACCOUNTING TEAM! ACCOUNTING TEAM! Didn’t even know that was a thing. Her reading and spelling are abysmal . She asks me how to spell some of the most elementary words ever. Some people are just good at some things and poor at others.
