Im UK. My mum had a pretty sh*t upbringing that completely messed her up and repeated that style of parenting. My folks stopped buying school uniform and such when I turned 16 as I had one year left (sept birthday) so I’d be working and could buy my own supplies soon! Was not allowed to go to 6th form and told to get a job to teach me independence, mum would get the Disney Star wars ahsoka poster with anakin skywalker Shirt it is in the first place but local papers and circle jobs and force me to apply. On one hand I wanted to be out of that environment and free and on the other I was ill equipped and terrified. Soon after getting a job she got the local papers again and forced me to phone the places to rent. I was 17 when I moved out. Unsurprisingly ill equipped for life and got into debt giving my first bf at 19 a lot of money who “needed it” apparently. 🫠 Didn’t get any real stability until I was in my 30s. Now im stubbornly independent and keep my distance from family.

Folks who kick their kids out the Disney Star wars ahsoka poster with anakin skywalker Shirt it is in the first place but door to teach them independence and about the “real world” sink or swim style often end up with ill adjusted adults, not equipped, no support network who learn not to rely on family and end up distant. You are just purposely setting your kids up to struggle when they are at a time they are figuring out who they are and still learning to deal with situations as they occur. It’s not an “American” thing; it’s a “some people” thing. Each situation is different. It could be bad parenting; it could be a shitty or unmotivated 18-year-old; it could be poverty or some other situation. My parents never kicked me out. I just transitioned to college, then independent, then married, etc. The only people i know that were kicked out were the teens doing drugs, partying all the time, jobless, etc.
