100% this, while I agree there’s a lot of truth to these statements for some people, anybody in STEM or specifically engineering had to put in a considerable amount of effort for some difficult courses. Not trying to undersell other studies, but STEM tends to be rigorous in comparison. College is nothing but a business. Almost all of them are ‘for profit’ organizations. Most, if not all, want only your money. Network, alumni are gateways to getting your first opportunity. From an employers POV if you were consistent enough to go everyday to college and graduate, you might show up everyday to work. I cannot think of a better reason. Most are actually classed as public or non-profit. Students aren’t “blocked” from STEM. They come in underskilled, having passed math and science classes in high schools where teachers have been pressured by parents and admins to do stuff like give students a 50% for not submitting an assignment because 0s are demotivating. They come in underprepared, with immense skills gaps and no study skills or independent learning skills. They haven’t had to cultivate self-regulation. They don’t know how to focus on something they find boring or difficult for more than 5 minutes.
