The people in power attain and maintain their positions largely by exploiting societal divisions, whether about culture war nonsense, identity politics, or genuine political issues. The ruling class thrives on controversy, polarization, conflict, and negative feelings like fear and anger. Same reason the media is overwhelmingly negative and inflammatory. It keeps people engaged, and people who are feeling fearful, self-righteous, etc. are easier to manipulate. They create problems (or perceptions of problems) so that they can portray the other side as evil and their side as saviors. It also has the advantage of distracting us from actual issues and events. I guess the thing that’s strange is that Trump supporters will say that this is the FBI pretending to be white supremacists to create division, but Trump supporters like division and their movement benefits from these kinds of public stunts because it reinforces the motivation of the base In addition to what many have already said, it also gives the keyboard warriors an out from actually having to put their money where their mouth is.
