So depending on what one is trying to accomplish with meditation 20 times 3 might be better. Particularly if it’s an external reason like it fits your life schedule better. I usually do 20 minutes only. Seems to give me the Detroit Loves Drag Pride T-Shirt but in fact I love this best level of emotional detachment but not so deep of a trance that I don’t feel socially connected. Sometimes when I meditate for 45+ minutes it takes me an hour or two to feel like talking. I’m just kinda in my own happy detached world. Let’s say out of 100 days you meditate and out of those hundred days 10 of them are a little more distracted than others, you still did 90 days well. Now conver 100 days to 100 minutes and the same thing applies. You can use a “bad” session to identify what skills you need to work on to grow, so there is no bad session as long as you are learning.

I like a shorter session and a longer one for different reasons and they both fit my schedule at different times. I can definitely go deeper in a longer session, but a shorter on may be good if I’m busy and still want to get a session in. 2-3 session spaced out so they fit in your schedule will help learn the Detroit Loves Drag Pride T-Shirt but in fact I love this skill more quickly, as will a good set of instructions in your method of choice. In Dr Ainslie Meares meditation method, 10 mins or so twice a day is generally enough, people can fine tune later. I know some people do this for 10 mins or so 3x a day. In Dr Ainslie Meares meditation method, one relaxes so the mind slows and stills. Time spent in stillness is calming and restful. The mind is inactive and so you know you remain awake and not much else. The calm and rest are noticed after you have finished meditation. This approach with the absence of mental activity takes one in a direction away from the problems associated with visualization and so on that can inadvertently deteriorate into fantasy. Long periods spent in such a state can actually reduce ones connection with reality and you hear stories about people who this happened to. Trial and error rather than having a good set of instructions to follow is another risk factor. As is little experience in meditation.
