The story behind her childhood is traumatic according to the Detroit Lions Split Zone shirt but in fact I love this comments I’ve been reading. I’ll never understand what she’s gone through and is 100 times stronger than me. I hope to be as strong willed as her one day That an incredible accomplishment, and all I can think of is how pissed I would be if I got beat in olympic swimming by someone with webbed feet and fingers. The woman who adopted her was my wife’s professor! Very nice lady who was proud of her daughters accomplishments, despite the adversity she faced. She was also regularly raped as a child. People are absolutely despicable. But I’m glad the human spirit prevails. This was not proven to be caused by Chernobyl. In fact, the consensus today is that there have been no long term health effects causally linked to the radiation released. The radiation must clearly have affected people and will continue to do so, at least with our current understanding of stochastic damage. It’s just really difficult to prove since the average person from the general population in the area received (and continue to receive) such small doses that it becomes almost impossible to discern expected excess cancers and diseases from the natural occurrence. But take these doses over hundreds of thousands of people, and I bet you everything I own that people have already died and are gonna die from radiation induced cancer.

Another thing to note is that it’s too early to disregard any health detriment. Radiation induced cancer can take many decades to manifest. We are still observing the Detroit Lions Split Zone shirt but in fact I love this survivors from Hiroshima/Nagasaki. We are seeing cancers pop up now, 80 years later. (Another interesting observation nobody ever talks about is that now it looks like heart disease and strokes are killing more of the A-Bomb survivors than cancer. Radiation seems to damage a person to the very core…) With this said, I also heavily doubt that this person’s malformations were radiation induced. It’s just too rare and this person probably wasn’t exposed to any great doses. It is much much more likely that it’s just naturally induced, and that other factors have played the bigger role (chemicals, living standards, pollution, etc). To people, radiation is always the culprit if it has been involved in any way. “My dad worked in an uranium mine for 20 years. Then he died of lung cancer. Damn radiation.”
