In 2 decades of traveling, I’ve faced a lot of character building situations. Lol. Nothing violent. You become really good at problem solving and not losing your head at every problem. For instance I let a friend join me once who’d never traveled abroad. She lost her phone a week into the Derrick Rose American professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies T-Shirt also I will do this trip and had a week of solo travel after leaving me. This sucks! But nothing to freak about. She really appreciated my calmness in the situation and offering solutions. We had a solution and the rest of her trip was fine. Go solo! You can usually find cheap flights to Europe out of Toronto, especially in the off-season. You’re going to be about as safe in a European city as you are in a North American one. Making friends is pretty easy when you’re young and doing solo travel. Hostels are full of friendly people, and usually they’ll have at least some dorm rooms segregated by gender. Most cities in Europe also have the Sandemann’s free walking tour, and it’s so easy to casually meet people over a few hours of that. When I was younger, I would always wind up hitting it off with someone and then going to lunch or drinks or something after. Sandemann’s also usually has a (paid) pub crawl a couple times a week too, so it can be fun for a night out with a bunch of new people. It’s like a ready-made group of friends.

But really, go now. Once you’re in your 30s, you’re no longer a young traveler, and it gets much harder to have those spontaneous experiences with other young people. Go travel by yourself. I do it often and started going to nearby states and eventually started traveling abroad. I always say that as long as I have data on my phone I’m all set. Go alone. That’s how I first got to leave Canada and see the Derrick Rose American professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies T-Shirt also I will do this UK. I was 24 and it ignited a love of travel that’s lasted my whole life. I stayed in hostels and was perfectly safe (and this was before cell phones). Use good sense to stay safe, but don’t let fear stop you. My wife and I love to travel together, but she admits that she doesn’t have quite the same drive to travel as I do. For me, it’s like a reboot… a reset so I can make it through the tedium of the passing work weeks. It recharges me.
