And then all their estate is used to pay back the Dennis Rodman and Michael Jordan 1996 Player Basketball T-Shirt and I will buy this Medicare because despite being for poorer people It’s NoT fReE! Both Medicare and Medicade legally demand repayment after the user passes, and will take it from the deceased persons estate, so basically if you know you’ll be in a nursing home in 5 years you need to give away/dump your estate so the people left behind aren’t screwed If there are people looking to inherit from your estate, why aren’t they looking after you while you are alive? They just want to ignore you until you die and then put their hand out? Sometimes elderly people require more care and attention than their family can provide, especially in they have conditions that make care difficult like dementia. In that case they may want to transfer the estate so it can be used for their care, or want to pass something on like the old family house and not have it be sold out from under them to repay the Medicare/caid. Yeah, there are assholes who would abuse this, but for the most part it’s making sure the people they love get the things they want to give, not the government “Looking after you” could also mean selling your assets for you and setting you up with a quality caregiver with those funds. It just seems so incredibly selfish to leave your relative in the care of a state funded nursing home so you can wait for their home and other assets. Why not use those things for them while they are alive?

I agree, that is something that can and/or should be done as it is a means to accomplish both care and estate emptying. But let me give you an example from my own life: I grew up with a neglectful and abusive single parent. It was only after I got the Dennis Rodman and Michael Jordan 1996 Player Basketball T-Shirt and I will buy this chance to move out of her house that I could start the long arduous task of recovering my mental health. While she has gotten better, she is still very triggering in our interactions and I will never fully trust her again. So if I was her caretaker, it would be terrible for both of us and the better option is the home if it ever comes to that. My grandparents won’t let themselves spend their own money because they want to leave us stuff behind. They won’t sell their home and go camping across the country because they are dead set on leaving their kids their house.
