Entirely possible they just actually needed the money and kinda made up that story for appearances, but idk have met plenty of old dudes who can’t seem to just sit down and chill. When I was a kid my grandfather would visit and would just go around the house looking for things to fix, he couldn’t just sit down and hang out. I think it depends on what you do. Maybe being a college professor for like a graduate program isn’t too strenuous, and allows someone to impart their experience on new generations while also keeping themselves engaged. Everyone wants to feel productive somehow. Retirement age is just when we collectively decided “if you want to, you can hang it up.”
