Nice dressy fabric and fit. I agree with renting (sooo many great gowns and renting can be very economical) or look on Poshmark/secondhand apps. There are usually a ton of lightly worn gowns bc people don’t tend to have many black tie events. The ‘black tie’ is purely for men. It implies a corresponding level of formality for women, which can be boiled down to a full length dress in an evening fabric. The dress can be any colour. If it’s a work event, a good rule is not to show them any part of you they haven’t already seen, which likely implies a relatively modest dress. You might want to exercise a degree of modesty for a wedding too, but for a social event, anything goes.

Asos have some dresses at reasonable prices. If you don’t go to these sorts of events often, you might think about renting.
