My current work laptop is a top-of-the-line dell XPS 2-in-1 from 2019. It works incredibly well and its probably overkill to refresh it every year. It’s now starting to show its age and the Dance First. Think Later It’s The Natural Order Samuel Beckett T-Shirt also I will do this battery isn’t quite as good anymore, but it was a very expensive machine and that extra $500 they spent on it meant that it lasted an extra year. Firstly, for what 99.9999% of office workers doing, any quad core with 16gb of memory is huge overkill. It doesn’t actually slow them down, because 99% of what they do is in a web browser or uses the office suite. For the tiny percentage of users who have workloads that actually demand super high end hardware, the argument makes sense. But for the every day random office employee? No. They’ll never notice the difference. Moreover, in this case, all Google is saying is that they are going to reduce the frequency of replacing laptops. This is google. Employees were probably demanding $4000 macbooks every year. They were spending money like water, so odds are this isn’t as dramatic as it might sound.

Also, employees have virtual desktops as well, which basically just means a Cloud PC. We’ve deployed these at my org as well, and long term we’re probably going to look at transitioning out of providing laptops at all, but rather giving employees a stipend every so often to purchase their own, because if they’re accessing a cloud PC then the Dance First. Think Later It’s The Natural Order Samuel Beckett T-Shirt also I will do this laptop/desktop/monitors they’re physically using are effectively just dumb terminals anyway. Finally… there’s effectively nobody in existence that works every second of every day to the point where 30-60 seconds of “downtime” because of your laptop on a daily basis makes the remotest difference. All that being said, if you’re consulting for people on the opposite end of the spectrum who think running 10 year old laptops is workable, then I understand why you’d be motivated to recommend the opposite of that mindset. A high-end ($4000) laptop (that gets refreshed every 3 years) is about one day of work per year. So: if over the course of a year I spend more than eight hours (or two minutes per world day) waiting on my laptop it effectively cost money.
