I am lucky that I didn’t end up in the hospital. I was in the woods by myself for most of it and came close to death a few times. It wasn’t so much ‘so enlightened that I didn’t care about maintaining my health’ so much as very separate from my physical being. I guess you’re right in a way. I recognized how limited this physical form is and how attached we get to it. I’m nothing special, but now that I’m enlightened I know that white cheddar mac is just regular mac without the orange coloring. What I mean is, going more than 10 days without food or 3 days without water is extremely dangerous to your body and brain regardless of how good someone is at meditating. I think anyone that would do that for the purpose of mindfulness or spirituality is missing the point

Absolutely dangerous bordering on reckless. I DON’T recommend that anyone ever do this. I was pretty apprehensive about it but I had prepared for it for almost a year. By the end I was passing out regularly while trying to stand up due to the lack of electrolytes. Not at all good for the body. I would think, the term like “days or years of meditation” is rather a metaphor to indicate that one should spend most of the time on self reflection, self awareness and then taking action, rather than Buddha or others actually sitting at the same place without food or other needs (ofcourse assuming they are not into something like “yoga nidra”)
