I was hired for 3 months on early May, and they’ve just let me go at the end of my third week because I was not ‘at the level’ they required. They knew exactly what I was and wasn’t capable of, and still made me feel like crap. So you have to understand that people are not to be trusted. Just trust in your skills. You need to clarify this ASAP. Are you saying you’re not working under a W2 but are being independently contracted and will pay your own taxes? Don’t do this if that’s the case. If you don’t know, figure out how you’re classified. If you’re independent they’ve misclassified you illegally to avoid paying their share of your Medicare/social security, and you’ll have a huge tax bill to pay the IRS.

The “firing” then calling back with a 1/3 reduction is totally sus. They might have thought they had the spare capacity to bring on an intern then realized too late they don’t. Sh*t happens, and people change their minds. I don’t have any advice but if a company fired an intern it’s not worth to worry about it, just pretend that it never happened and keep looking for other internships or try to learn on your own and get a full time job. It feels like shit when you ate let go, I also got let go from an internship (nothing related to cs, I was an electromechanical engineer) and I felt horrible, but tbh if it’s wasn’t for that I wouldn’t be where I am (working as a dev and making way more money than I was going to as an electromechanical engineer I have literally been at my full time dev job for two months and they won’t give me nearly enough tasks because they want to me to keep training on the tech stack until I am ready. Screw those guys man Most US companies can fire non-union employees at will. That said, this is not how to manage or treat an intern, especially since you were up-front with them! If they advertised this as an internship through your university career center, you should definitely report them – they should be delisted.
