I can absolutely agree that individuals can use spirituality to uplift themselves and give their lives hope and meaning, but organized religion was never designed for anything other than keeping the Dad The Man The Myth The Ultimate Astros Fan Vintage Shirt But I will love this masses under control using fear. I think it depends a lot on how people view “primitive” religions too. Native American spirituality and the Native American Church are real religions, sure. But they were also partly built as legal fights, like the Satanic Temple: The right to worship, the right to use certain medicinal plants in worship, etc. A lot of it is parables too. Not meant to be taken literally, unlike a lot of literalist Christianity. Some of it is a memorization device. “If you hurt a rattlesnake, you’ll never find this plant again”—the plant usually grows by rattlesnake dens, and if you piss them off, you won’t live long enough to find more of the plant. In cases of minority or historically persecuted religions, a lot of it is a way to connect with culture and community. I’m agnostic but I think the underwater panther is super neat. The Internet exists for cat pics, after all. So while I understand the science behind ritual and trances, how it’s not exactly third-eye-wide-open stuff? I still think it has important philosophical merit, alongside Greek stories like Plato’s cave.

I also don’t begrudge elders who converted (or died) to Christianity and who still cling to it being true. Mainly because I don’t have the Dad The Man The Myth The Ultimate Astros Fan Vintage Shirt But I will love this skill to handle the existential crisis of, “If it was all for nothing, then why did they do this to us?” Bad enough trying to handle that myself. Basically, religion is far more than what people from the dominant modern monotheist beliefs can view it as. Like how different languages change how you view the world. Religion and spirituality shape worldview, even if you become an atheist or agnostic. We can’t just shake off the cultural norms that become ingrained, even if they aren’t even in holy scripture (see: Dante’s Inferno). in addition to the other comment: soooo much of reddit-type atheism assumes Christianity or that all religions are like Christianity, which gets extremely grating hearing the same arguments about Christian interpretations of the tanakh when that’s not remotely how Jews view the text Tbf I only ever usually hear atheists talking specifically about Christianity, I don’t exactly see people going hard in the paint against Hinduism or somethingHave you see the average reddit mod? I assume the user demo is not too far off so the excuses for eating like crap will be aplenty. As someone who cooks at home a lot, I’d be curious to know how many hours a year I spend doing food shopping, prepping and cooking. I’m just cooking for me and I bet it’s still an awful lot. It would be nice to have all those hours back. I don’t really blame people for feeling like they don’t have the time. Often just trying to figure out what to make is a massive headache. Learning how to cook if you were never taught is hard. If you grew up poor or in a food desert area chances are you have food aversions and don’t know how to cook a lot of stuff in an efficient way that tastes good and will actually keep. It takes time and resources and when you are working multiple jobs and have dependents who might be picky as well acting like the only barrier is laziness is shitty. Learning about nutrition and what actually constitutes “healthy” meals against the wealth of changing and sometimes blatant misinformation that exists is difficult. Living in food deserts is difficult. Giving up eating something unhealthy as a comfort when your life is already hard as fuck is difficult. Healthy food spoils faster and you risk losing money by not getting to it fast enough. If you have been poor you know the average meat and veggie quality at your local affordable grocery store can be appalling. Feeding a family is difficult and gets exponentially harder with each person you add. Carting groceries when you can’t afford a car is difficult.
