I was on vacation in England recently and met some new folks at a bar. The topic of guns in America came up and I mentioned that it is pretty common to know someone who has been shot. They didn’t believe me, I had to think about it a bit and I realized I actually know quite a few people who have been killed, both in individual crimes and in a couple of mass shootings. As a Brit in the Dad Bod Working On My Six Pack Beer Fathers Day T-Shirt moreover I love this US this is what we don’t get. We had mass shootings, so now, while you can own a gun in the UK, it’s only allowed after the local police and your doctor has been consulted, and if you keep one at home the police have the right to inspect and make sure it’s locked safely away. It’s not bloody rocket science. Over here I shoot for fun and am studying for my hunter’s license, but the easy availability of guns is bonkers and the state of range safety in some places I’ve shot is lamentable by some. If you want a gun all well and good, but you’ve got to earn the right and should have to demonstrate proficiency and make sure the gun is insured and safe. We don’t let teenagers drive supercars without passing a driving test and getting insurance – why should guns be different? In the UK we had Hungerford where 16 people died in 1987, which led to a ban on most semi-autos and high-capacity shotguns. Then it was Dunblaine, 17 dead and we banned handguns and some more firearms.

I just had a new guy start a shift at work. 3 days into the Dad Bod Working On My Six Pack Beer Fathers Day T-Shirt moreover I love this job, he pulls up his shirt and shows me a chest and belly full of scars. He was shot by accident in a drive-by while hanging out with his friends in the middle of the town. He is not the first person I have met who has been ahot. Not saying that it’s not a serious problem, but in a country of 340 million people, knowing multiple people who have been killed by guns is exceedingly rare. Knowing someone who has been shot is obviously more common, but I still think it would be misleading to tell people not from the US that it’s a common occurrence. But it is common. Your own statistics back that. I know three personally. One in war, one suicide, one accidental. I’d be willing to bet that’s not true, and instead that you simply aren’t aware of it. Hard to find stats, but 1 million Americans were shot between 2010 and 2020. That’s 1 out of every 330 Americans, and that’s just in one decade. If you don’t know any, that’s luck.
