I live in San Diego, and I was hospitalized with acute viral hepatitis after wakeboarding in late August 2023 after Tijuana’s sewage treatment plant was essentially disabled by tropical storm Hilary. But the water in Mission Bay remained contaminated for much longer than three days after Hilary, which I was not aware of at the time. When I was admitted to the hospital, I didn’t know why I was sick, but one of the first questions they asked was whether I had been in the water. Apparently they had a mini surge of sick people who had been. Further tests confirmed their suspicion.

It took me about 3 months to make a full recovery. Then there‘s the military that just did whatever it wanted and was never held accountable for the pollution it has created for well over a century. Every winter the Tijuana river was in the news and it seemed like there was a plan to fix Mexico’s problem they were simply unable to fix themselves but of course no one on this side of the border wanted to pay for it. I‘m genuinely surprised they have any sort of sewage treatment.
